there was a shooting at a mall in Tucson this year -- one that I regularly, albeit begrudgingly, visit. It's hard not to think that things are getting worse in the states.

Not sure if we need to do better...because different foreigners will have different viewpoints, will have heard different news stories, etc. Seems like it was this persons chance to deflect the attention off of Rocinha and place it on the States due to the presence of an American at the table.

I lived in Rio and received 'interesting' questions too, all based on what they know from t.v. and film or the all too common "I have a friend who has a friend who visited the US..." story.

I'd rather live in a town with a mall and visit that mall regularly than live in Rocinha...thats what it comes down to. As for the drug war in Rio, Capitão Nascimento from Tropa de Elite hit it on the head. Its the playboys who finance the drug trade, giving the bandidos money, which gives them power and prestige which makes certain little favelados look up to them and take sides.

I wish more of these conversations took place between Brazilians and Americans. Cheers
